C4ADS, in collaboration with Born Free USA, is pleased to announce the release of our newest report, Out of Africa: Mapping the Global Trade in Illicit Elephant Ivory. The report examines the logistics, trends, flows, networks, and markets of the illicit ivory trade. It finds a professionalized and transnational system that is integrated into the broader black market, operating seamlessly from the remotest corners of Africa thousands of miles to booming Asian retail centers. The investigation was funded by Born Free USA and in part by the Giles W. and Elise G. Mead Foundation.
The first report in the series, Ivory's Curse: The Militarization & Professionalization of Poaching in Africa, examined how illicit ivory enables and sustains a wide range of highly militarized actors across Africa. Taken together, the two reports illustrate that wildlife crime is no longer just a conservation issue.
