Donald B. Smith

U.S. Army Brigadier General (Ret.) Donald B. Smith has served as the 53rd Sheriff of Putnam County, New York since January 2002. He was previously the Deputy County Executive of Putnam County. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Gen. Smith has also attended numerous Army schools and training programs, including the prestigious Leadership Development Program for Executives at Eckerd College. He holds a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.

Gen. Smith's awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.
