J. Michael Waller, Ph.D.

Dr. Michael Waller is the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Professor of International Communication Professional Experience at the Institute for World Politics (IWP), where he directs graduate programs on public diplomacy and political warfare.
The Vice President for Information Operations at the Center for Security Policy, Dr. Waller has served in numerous capacities for the US government, including as a congressional staffer for both the US House of Representatives and the US Senate and serving on a White House Task Force on Central America. He has acted as advisor for the US Information Agency (USIA), the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
Dr. Waller was a founding editor of Demokratizatsiya: The Journal of Post-Soviet Democratization, published in cooperation with American University and Moscow State University. He has written for Insight, Reader's Digest, USA Today,, the Washington Times and the Wall Street Journal. His books include the prize-winning Secret Empire: The KGB in Russia Today (Westview, 1994) and Dismantling Tyranny: Transitioning Beyond Totalitarian Regimes, edited with Ilan Berman (Rowman & Littlefield, 2006). Dr. Waller was the John M. Olin Fellow while earning his M.A. at Boston University and holds a Ph.D. from the Institute for the Study of Conflict, Ideology and Policy at Boston University. Dr. Waller also maintains Fourth World War, a blog on terrorism and politics.
