Specialized Training Programs in Critical National and Global Security Challenges
Overview
The Center offers a variety of specialized and comprehensive training programs focusing on key national and global security challenges. Distinguished experts have developed unique curricula, hands-on exercises and innovative teaching techniques to rapidly build capacity in information operations, diplomacy, cultural awareness, counterterrorism, information interoperability, vulnerability assessment and force protection. The Center’s team has trained over 6,000 law enforcement, intelligence and military personnel in a wide variety of security-related disciplines.
Delivery
Courses are typically offered on-site by two instructors. Taught in a unique dynamic setting, classes require rapid delivery of materials and actively involve the students in topic discussions and exercises. Training is offered in 4-hour or 8-hour instructional units delivered intensively over one 5-day working week or over two working weeks. Schedules are subject to customization to meet scheduling requirements. Courses offered in Specialized Training Programs are no-credit courses. Trainees are registered as no-degree students in the Directorate of Education at the Center. Certificates are issued to trainees upon the successful completion of classes.
Training includes:
- Lectures
- Class and group discussions
- In-class exercises and competition among class teams (“red team/blue team”)
- Role-playing exercises
- Tabletop scenarios and workshops
- Interactive and multimedia material including video clips
- Self-paced and reach-back materials for students wishing to expand their knowledge
- After-action reviews
Distance / hybrid learning modules:
- Materials delivered over the Internet

CADS has offered
Afghan Cultural Awareness Aiming to develop overall awareness of the history, government, customs and traditions of modern day Afghanistan, this course provides the students with background and specific knowledge necessary to navigate everyday situations and avoid potential misunderstandings.
Counterterrorism A thorough overview of the motivations and operating procedures of terrorist groups from a variety of cultures and backgrounds in order to enable accurate assessment of the threats they pose. Students will study the history of known organized terrorist activity, including common cultural historical correlations and groups’ modus operandi.
Cultural Intelligence Through a series of case studies, this course introduces the concept of cultural intelligence, its dimensions, techniques and methods. A greater understanding of why and how people act and think as they do is provided through an exploration of language, religion, myth, customs, history, art, ethics, law, cuisine and humor. The course emphasizes the importance of cultural knowledge for designing successful analytical strategies to analyze foreign data. Techniques to better interact with foreign peoples whether they are neutral, people of an occupied territory, or enemies are also discussed.
Diplomacy & Soft power At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to discuss the merits of various approaches to international relations. Students also learn to use specific analytical frameworks for current international issues, particularly to apply “soft power.”
Domain-specific Arabic Language Training Focusing on domain-specific taxonomies and ontology including regional dialects and expressions, this course enhances Arabic language skills as they relate to weapons of mass destruction, clandestine operations, intelligence, government, computer systems, networks, media and propaganda.
Emerging Digital Threats A series of seminars, lectures and exercises address emerging digital threats and attack methodologies in the post-fourth generation warfare era with real-life examples from past US military operations. Featuring network centric warfare, information operations and asymmetric warfare paradigms, the course focuses on emerging threats and attacks to the global computer network infrastructure. A variety of formal and mathematical methods to model digital attacks are explored including the missions and means framework, graph theory, fuzzy logic, lattice theory, reflexive theory and modal logic. Case studies, including military systems and engineering, help place in perspective material presented in other security courses.
Information Operations This course provides a survey of Information Operations (IO) as they have contributed to peace, conflict and cessation of hostilities. Students study the methods and elements that contribute to successful Information Operations.
Infrastructure Protection & Force Protection This course provides a survey of in-situ infrastructure capable of posing a direct threat to the surrounding community if targeted for destruction. The fundamental distinction between accidental and intentional industrial disasters will be examined.
Intention Awareness and Situation Awareness The course analyzes the implications of motivation, cognition, learning, perception, personality, action, memory and emotion on such heterogeneous areas as intelligence analysis, profiling and systems design.
Middle East – Cultural Awareness This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to understand the complexities of Islam and the Muslim and Arab worlds, featuring comprehensive studies of various cultures, their traditions and ways of life.
Network Design and Performance An examination of the factors impacting the design and performance of computer networks. Students use simulation tools to design networks based on identified needs, analyze the performance of these networks and investigate the impact of design alternatives. Designs for site, campus and enterprise networks, which combine WAN and LAN technologies, are investigated. The incorporation and impact of business goals and security needs is also considered.
Wired and Wireless Network Security Computer network security, web security, intrusion detection, viruses, worms and other rogue programs are examined in aims to develop international standards and computer security models. Protection against statistical inference, biometrics and other advanced authentication mechanisms are also examined.
